i’m pretty sure we’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t experienced that quintessential moment, be it at a party, wedding, junior prom, college dive bar or simply any semi-large gathering that includes classic music, when the DJ suddenly decides it’s in his best interest to become a quick favorite of 90% of the room’s female population by playing a song that will make them squeal “OHMYGOSH it’s my song!” in complete unison and rush in a frantic frenzy to the center of the dance floor, arms flailing and karaoke-queen voices ever-ready, shocked that so many other girls around them appear to share an affinity for THEIR song…when it was CLEARLY written SOLEY for/about/with them in mind…
phenomenon: Van Morrison’s “Brown-Eyed Girl.”

it’s always (almost) every girl’s song, or so it seems from the outsider’s perspective of one for whom the song is CLEARLY not written. i’ve lost count of the amount of times girl friends have grabbed my hand and yanked me onto the dance floor with them, and of course I always play the dutiful friend, singing and bopping along with everyone else to the cult-catchy tune. oh, sure, it’s a fab one; it’s got all the makings of a song you’d want written about you, carefree and bubbly and sing-alongy; and besides, who doesn’t love a brown-eyed girl, right? especially when she can sing “sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la, dee-da” and slip-and-slide all along the waterfall with you…
seriously, this is enough to make a girl want to dye-her-eyes-to-match-her-hair, this music-envy.
on second thought…i decided years ago i had enough with this whole “Brown-Eyed Girl” superiority that exists every time the song comes on…and i’ve been preparing my rebuttal internally for too long. so maybe us sky-eyed chicks don’t have a song as wildly captivating as Van Morrison’s, or at least as deeply integrated into the American culture’s musical repetoire…but we certainly have inspired many-a singer/songwriter/band to pen a tune that pays homage to our baby blues. (for those of you with green eyes…you have Coldplay’s amazing “Green Eyes,” which is worth a bazillion other ballads about eye-color. enough said.)
so here’s the beginning of my list of songs about blue-eyed girls…and if you know of any others, please send them my way. it’s entirely non-comprehensive; this is only the start of a lifelong list that i hope will continue to multiply at rapid speed….(hint hint, to any of you musicians who might be reading this).
